Head of English Department

Head of English – September 2019

“Rashid School for Boys provides all students with the opportunity to acquire English as a second language to a good, if not excellent, standard. We believe that this is one of the greatest strengths of our school.

It means that our students have language skills that other Emirati students, graduating from local schools, can only dream of.

Therefore, the challenge for us all, and especially the language departments of the school, is to make every boy a lover of language, proud to be bilingual and aware of his rare, prized talent.”

Rashid School for Boys has a thriving English Department of seven hard working, inspirational teachers. In addition, teachers of other subjects contribute to the teaching of this key subject.

The department’s work is crucial to the success of all students, the majority of whom are Arabic speakers, utilising English as their main working language. Programmes, following the National Curriculum, are flexible and individualised, taking into consideration the needs of students with a wide range of abilities. Providing access to the full range of subjects in the curriculum demands effective teaching in the English Department. Members of the department work very closely as a team, holding regular planning and evaluation meetings. They also work closely with Learning Support and other departments to ensure that literacy needs across the whole school are addressed.

As well as taking core English, students in Years 7 to 11 have literacy and library lessons. Year 11 pupils are entered for a combination of examinations including IGCSE English as a Second Language, First language and English Literature. Post 16 it is possible for our most proficient students to take CIE International A’ level English Language.  Pupils wishing to apply for local or American-system universities take a one-year school-designed course in Year 12, which includes preparation for SAT, IELTS and EMSAT examinations.

The successful candidate will be hardworking, creative, enthusiastic and willing to lead a team of highly motivated teachers. The candidate will have a range of teaching experience, covering all age ranges and abilities. The ability to produce resources which take into account the special needs of second language learners will be critical. Applications from candidates who have used their I.T. skills, both in presentation and collection of data, will be particularly welcomed.

The Head of English is responsible for the development of the curriculum and for ensuring that standards of teaching and learning are high. This also means that you will be expected to work with other HoDs, Learning Support, Primary and Secondary Literacy coordinators, as well as the LRC manager in order to ensure that literacy and language are truly embedded in all lessons and all subjects. A collaborative approach to management, teaching and learning will be essential.

The English Department has a history of examination success and the students have performed well at KS3 and IGCSE. Outstanding attainment in IELTS, our graduation criteria, is one of its greatest strengths.

Students are taught in 5 groups in all year groups, depending on ability, behaviour and educational needs.
