Head of Mathematics: Secondary

The successful candidate will be creative, enthusiastic and willing to work in and lead a team of five energetic and highly motivated teachers. Three full time staff and two part-time teachers with staff with additional responsibilities for other areas of the school. The candidate will have a range of teaching experience, to include KS3 and KS4 and A-level Mathematics. Recent work with second language learners will be important, and the ability to produce resources that take into account a range of special learning needs will be a major advantage. An informed sensitivity to the students’ Arab-Islamic culture will be essential. Applications from candidates who have used I.T. skills, both in presentation and collection of data will be particularly welcomed.

The Head of Mathematics is responsible for development of the Mathematics curriculum and for ensuring that the standards of teaching and learning are high. Some familiarity with the American and International systems of education to deliver a range of courses that form a significant part of the school’s own High School Diploma program leading to graduation at the end of year 12. Students are prepared for SAT, EmSAT to meet the successful graduation criteria of the Dubai, Ministry of Education.

The department works closely with the Language Support Department. Support Department Assistants are used to further empower the students in the mathematic classes. Class sizes tend to be between 10 to 16 students. The department is well resourced with kinesthetic resources, a wide range of software supported course textbooks and internet based resources.

Mathematics is taught in five streamed ability groups in years 7-9, consideration is given to language skills and educational needs. Key Stage 3 Mathematics is based on UK national curriculum skills and concepts. The most able students are often “fast tracked” to IGCSE in Year 9. Teaching approaches are flexible and individualised, taking into consideration the needs of pupils with a wide range of learning abilities. An atmosphere of enthusiastic but ordered learning is encouraged.

The Year 10 and 11 course is the EDEXCEL IGCSE Linear course offered at Foundation and Higher Levels. The majority of students follow this course. However, some students unable to meet the demands of the external assessment of the IGCSE will be assessed using an internal program of mathematics. This is designed to meet the school’s own criteria for a School Certificate for students who are more academically challenged.

Years 12 and 13 offer students the opportunity to study IAS and IA-level Mathematics and two ability levels of internally designed HSD courses.

  •           difficulties in English
  • Awareness of current UK educational developments
  • Ability to maintain good relationships with pupils, parents and staff

Preferred Criteria

  • Ability to offer extra-curricular activities
  • Experience of teaching AS or A-level
  • Experience of UK changes at KS3, KS4 and A-level
